1. Who We Are

Karbidictionary.com is a free, community-supported online dictionary dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Karbi language. We are based in Assam, India, and have been serving speakers, students, and researchers since 2011. This Privacy Policy applies to all pages and features available at karbidictionary.com and any of its subdomains.

2. Information We Do Not Collect

We are proud to operate on a minimal-data model. We do not collect or store the following:

• No Account Registration: You are never required to create an account, sign in, or provide personal details to use the dictionary.
• No Personal Information: We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, dates of birth, or any other personally identifiable information (PII) through the site itself.
• No Search History: Searches performed within the dictionary are not linked to your identity. We do not build a record of what words you have searched for.
• No IP Address Logging: We do not log or store your IP address on our own servers in a way that identifies you personally.
• No Device Fingerprinting: We do not attempt to identify your device through browser fingerprinting or similar techniques.
• No Behavioural Profiling: We do not build profiles of individual users based on browsing habits, click patterns, or time spent on the site.

3. Information That May Be Collected Automatically

While we go to great lengths to minimise data collection, certain technical processes and third-party infrastructure may collect limited, anonymised data. We are transparent about each of these below.

3a. Cloudflare (Infrastructure & Security)

Our website is served through Cloudflare, a content delivery network (CDN) and security provider. Cloudflare may process your IP address and basic request data to protect the site from malicious traffic, prevent DDoS attacks, and improve performance. This processing is governed by Cloudflare's Privacy Policy. We do not have direct access to or control over this data.

Cloudflare also obfuscates email addresses displayed on the page (the [email protected] format you may see) as an anti-spam measure. This does not affect your privacy.

3b. Google Analytics (Aggregate Traffic Measurement)

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand broad, aggregate patterns of how the dictionary is used — for example, which categories are most popular, which device types our visitors use, and which countries our readers come from. This information helps us prioritise improvements to the dictionary.

We have configured Google Analytics with the following privacy protections:

• IP anonymisation is enabled, meaning your full IP address is never stored by Google on our behalf.
• We do not use GA4's advertising or remarketing features.
• We do not share GA4 data with any third parties for commercial purposes.
• Data retention is set to the minimum period available.

Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish unique visits. To learn more or to opt out, you can install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Google's full privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.

3c. Web Server Logs

Like all websites, our hosting server may generate standard access logs that record the URL requested, the time of the request, browser type, and referring page. These logs are used solely for diagnosing technical errors and ensuring server security. They are not used to identify individual users and are routinely purged.

4. Cookies and Local Storage

• No First-Party Tracking Cookies: We do not set any cookies ourselves that track your behaviour across the web or build a profile about you.
• Google Analytics Cookies: GA4 may set cookies (such as _ga and _gid) to distinguish visitors and sessions. These cookies do not contain personally identifiable information. They persist for up to 2 years (_ga) and 24 hours (_gid) respectively.
• Cloudflare Cookies: Cloudflare may set a short-lived cookie (e.g. __cf_bm) to help manage bot traffic and security checks. This expires within 30 minutes of inactivity.
• Session & Local Storage (Preferences): We may save your display preferences — such as Dark Mode or font size — in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device and is not transmitted to any server. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data.

5. How You Can Control Cookies

You have full control over cookies through your browser settings. Most modern browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies from individual sites. Note that blocking all cookies may affect the functioning of some site preferences. Useful guides for major browsers:

6. Contributions via Email

If you choose to contribute a word, correction, or audio clip by emailing us, your email address and any personal information you include in that message will be:

• Used only to correspond with you about your contribution.
• Never sold, shared, or disclosed to any third party for marketing or commercial purposes.
• Never added to any mailing list or used to send you unsolicited messages.
• Retained only as long as necessary to process your contribution, after which correspondence may be archived securely or deleted.

We publish contributed words and definitions with gratitude, but we will never publish your personal contact details.

7. Third-Party Links

Our website may contain links to external sites — such as cultural organisations, academic resources, or our social media profiles on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube, and LinkedIn. Once you leave Karbidictionary.com, this Privacy Policy no longer applies. We strongly encourage you to review the privacy policies of any external site you visit. We are not responsible for their content or data practices.

8. Children's Privacy

Karbidictionary.com is designed to be a safe, educational resource suitable for all ages, including children. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your country). Because we require no registration and collect no personal data through the site itself, children can use the dictionary safely. If you believe a child has inadvertently submitted personal information to us via email, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Data Security

Because we collect virtually no personal data, there is no database of your private information on our servers to be compromised. The few technical safeguards we have in place include:

• HTTPS Encryption: All traffic between your browser and our site is encrypted using TLS/SSL, ensuring that your connection is secure and cannot be intercepted.
• Cloudflare Security: Cloudflare provides an additional layer of protection against common web attacks.
• Email Security: Contributor emails are handled with care and stored securely. We do not use the email addresses of contributors for any purpose beyond their stated contribution.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the site after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.

We will never make changes that reduce your privacy protections without giving clear notice.

How to Submit a Word or Correction

To help us maintain the highest quality, please send an email to email@contact.karbidictionary.com with the following details:

• The Karbi Word: (Spelling in Karbi)
• Meaning: (In English, Assamese, or both)
• Part of Speech: (e.g., Noun, Verb, Adjective)
• Example Sentence: (How is the word used in a sentence?)
• Dialect/Region (Optional): (e.g., Rongkhang, Chinthong, Amri, etc.)

Why Email?

• Total Privacy: We don't need your phone number or a created profile. We only see what you choose to send us in your email.
• Direct Communication: You can explain the nuance or history of a word in detail, which a simple form might miss.
• Human Review: Every email is read by a real person. We value your expertise over an automated script.

What Can You Send Us?

• Restrictions: You may not "scrape" our website or use automated bots to copy our entire database for commercial use without our explicit written permission.

4. Accuracy of Information

While we strive for 100% accuracy, language is complex and evolving.

• The Karbi language has various dialects (Rongkhang, Chinthong, Amri, etc.). A definition may vary based on the region.
• We provide the information "as is." We are not liable for any misunderstandings or errors resulting from the use of our translations.

When you contribute a word or correction via email:
